I've never quite figured whether my childhood would be classed as rough. My father died when I was 5, then mother when I was 16. Yet I'd say I had a pretty good upbringing and I was lucky to go to a great comprehensive school. There was no abuse, though a boyfriend my mother had for a few years was very strict and bad-tempered. I suspect his discipline was very important in retrospect, though I lived in fear at the time. He used to make me disbud chrysthanemums and woe betide me if he found more than one bud on a plant! He had a brother who was just the opposite, puffing in his pipe and doing crosswords. They were a good cop/bad cop act I guess - shows the importance of a community in raising children. Anyway, I did a medical degree and PhD. No Nobel prize, but I survived😂
